The Long Tide
Chapter 1 — The Harbour Wall
They buried Agnes Quell on a Tuesday, because the tide allowed it.
In Carrow everything waited on the water. The boats went out when it let them and came back when it let them, and the dead were carried up to the chapel on the hill when the causeway was dry enough for the cart.
Mara walked behind the cart in her mother’s good boots, which were half a size too small, and counted the gulls on the chapel roof.

The Keeper’s Lamp
Part One
It was low tide. The boats sat in the mud at angles, like things that had been dropped.
At the far end of the wall the lighthouse stood with its back to the town, and for a moment Mara thought the fog had caught some trick of the evening in its glass. Then she saw that the lamp was lit.
The Keeper’s Door
a story
Nobody had climbed those stairs in eleven years. The keeper’s door had been chained since the winter the Margaret went down, and the chain was still there.
She could see it from here, a dark loop against the white paint.
